This past Sunday “Enemy” took home an impressive five awards at the 2014 Canadian Screen Awards. Best Director went to Denis Villeneuve, Sarah Gadon won for Best Supporting Actress, and the film also took home awards for Cinematography, Editing, and Original score.

We had the chance to catch up with Enemy star Jake Gyllenhaal and director Denis Villeneuve on the red carpet at TIFF13, here’s what they had to say about the film and working with each other:

Yesterday was the first annual ‘Canada’s Stars of the Awards Season in Los Angeles’ and it had a fantastic turnout. Considering the winter that’s going on up there its really no surprise that stars were eager to make the trip down to hollywood and its 40º(Celsius) temperature upgrade. We talked to over 30 Canadian actors, directors, and film industry elite to see if we could come up with “Canada’s choice” for the Best Picture Oscar. Along the way we learned a few things: 1) Canadians love to bet on the Oscars 2) Norman Jewison is great (but I guess we knew that) 3) Just because you are part of the film industry and you are in L.A. for Oscar weekend DOES NOT make you immune to absolutely butchering the name of a best picture nominee….

We will find out Sunday but this seems to me like a fairly accurate shakedown of how Academy votes may be skewed. You can check out our predictions for best picture here. For the record the final count was “12 Years a Slave” with 8, “The Wolf At The Door of Wall Street” with 4, “Dallas Buyers Club” and “American ShuffleHustle” with 3, and “Gravity” and “Her” with 1 each. Nobody voted for “Captain Phillips”, “Nebraska”, or “Philomena” but the latter two got a shout out from Norman Jewison.

It’s only three days until the Academy Awards but here in Hollywood another event is stealing all the buzz. The “largest rain event” in three years is expected to hit Los Angeles throughout Oscar weekend. Amidst the worst drought ever recorded, L.A. is almost as desperate for rain as Leonardo DiCaprio is for an Oscar… and both droughts could end this weekend!

Los Angeles has a little bit of a reputation for overreacting to inclement weather (as Jimmy Kimmel hilariously illustrates) but this storm actually seems pretty serious. The expected 3 inches of precipitation would come just short of matching the 3.6 inches of rain Los Angeles received for ALL of last year.

Oscars Rained Out?

SO what does all of this mean for the Oscars on Sunday? Probably nothing. The advanced warning of the storm has given Oscar organizers plenty of time to rainproof the red carpet area well in advance of showtime. While this is great news for redcarpetophiles, I’m personally disappointed that we won’t be seeing a mad 50m dash with shrieking actresses desperately trying to keep their dresses unscathed and not end up flat on their faces. For people who like betting on the oscars this would make for a fantastic prop bet: Which best actress nominated will have the fastest “limo to inside” time? My money is on the uber-fit Sandra Bullock but don’t count out the wily veteran Meryl Streep who will be on the carpet as an Oscar nominee for a record 18th time. It could have also been a rare showcase for designer umbrellas which unfairly never get their time in the sun (sorry).

Since rain has been so uncommon these past few years in L.A. the upcoming storm is causing quite the buzz on social media. One radio host hilariously coined it an #aquaticvortex and the hashtag took off.

Matthew Gallagher’s love of fashion took hold at an early age. Growing up in Amherst, Nova Scotia, his parents have a story they like to tell about a four-year-old Matthew following a woman around their family store exclaiming in awe that her shoes matched her all-red outfit.

Gallagher recounted this story and others to me over coffee on Thursday at Cafe M, a small independent coffee shop in his neighbourhood on Yonge Street.

From that first encounter at four his love of fashion blossomed, leading him to a letter writing campaign which landed him a much sought after internship with Tracy Reece and a summer in NYC studying drawing and painting at Parsons College at the age of sixteen.

“I was a sixteen year old kid with no experience in anything”

If the woman in the red dress and matching shoes ignited the flame, the summer in NYC transformed Gallagher’s passion to a full blown fire.

“In one block I would walk by as many people as lived in my whole hometown”

New York City fueled Gallagher’s thirst for travel. After completing high school he traveled around Canada in search of a metropolis in which to begin his career; living in Toronto, Montreal and Calgary before deciding to take the leap and attend school in Milan. While in Italy, Gallagher seized every opportunity for experience both travel and fashion, leading him to work as a costume designer for gaming company UBISoft’s Just Dance. He also earned an opportunity through FSN Collections to show his own creations in the Fall 2013 Collections.

Most incredible of all is that Matthew Gallagher put together his entire collection for WMCFW Fall ‘13—from conception to creation—in a single month, all on his own. It was at this point in our conversation I began to doubt his mortality. Or at the least, that he and I exist in the same reality where days consist of 24 hours made up of minutes only 60 seconds long.

So how does a wonder designer in his twenties start the process of creating a collection to debut at World MasterCard Fashion Week in Toronto? For Gallagher it began with a lifelong love of classic cinema—the origin of his inspiration for the Fall ‘13 collection. More specifically: Grace Kelly from Hitchcock’s To Catch A Thief and the glamour and sophistication of the French Riviera. After much sketching (Gallagher is a talented illustrator in addition to being able to alter the dimension of time), and once he feels he has a cohesive collection of looks, he proceeds in his selection of fabric and colour (all sourced from Italy and London). Oh, and then he continues on to create every single piece by hand.

“I’ll have an idea of a character that I’m designing clothes for… I’m not so strict to make it like a costume…it’s more just a feeling, my inspirations are more vague, not so specific.”

Now that Matthew Gallagher’s debut collection is behind him, he has moved back to Toronto and is preparing his Spring/Summer 2014 collection on a much more humane timeline. Gallagher states that his inspiration comes from his travels around the Italian Riviera: relaxed, simple looks that marry the casual elements of the Italian seaside with the glamour of the yachting elite.

“My inspiration for S/S’14 is my summers in italy…casual and old but there is this certain bit of glamour to it…glamours people having lunch for the day and just sailing off…”

I for one will wait with baited breath.

What’s a dream way to kick start your career as a fashion designer? How about having your designs sold in over 100 Target Stores across Canada? This dream is now a reality for Canadian designer, Sarah Stevenson. This week Stevenson won the TFI Toronto Fashion Incubator’s New Label competition, beating out finalists SEVENTHIRTYONE, Paria Shirvani and Christopher Paunil. The lavish TFI event, sponsored by Target awards provided one hard working designer the grand prize of $25,000 from philanthropist Suzanne Rogers, a collaboration with the mega brand, Target and a full page in Flare Magazine. Cocktails, evening gowns and A-list fashion personalities including Stacey McKenzie and Leesa Butler were on hand.

Stevenson, along with some of the most talented designers in Canada, competed in the annual 6 month long TFI challenge, that pits designers against each other. The designers had to create assigned designs and present them for evaluation to a panel of judges. The Milan trained Stevenson didn’t seem phased by the tough competition at all. “It was really exciting!” she said, seen here flanked by two statuesque models wearing her opulent and innovative designs. Montreal’s Melissa Nepton was the recipient of the Montreal leg of the competition that took place in February. Look for both the Melissa Nepton and Sarah Stevenson new lines that will be launched in participating Target locations across Canada in 2014.

“I have to get to work!” exclaimed Stevenson when asked what’s next for the 32- year old designer. Stevenson’s ‘Dutch Baroque painting’ inspired designs feature laser cutouts and innovative fabrics, sheer overlays and a touch of modern romanticism. To say we’re excited to be able to purchase her designs sooner than later is a bit of an understatement, especially when we heard how she personalizes her fabrics.

“I’m a textile designer, so I hand paint the fabrics to achieve the patterns” she said, with a gleam in her eye. “It’s such a huge opportunity to work with Target, because they sell more than just clothing. It’s a really massive chance for a designer to have the opportunity to  feature their designs across the board: accessories, home-wear; sheets, towels…the sky’s the limit!”
