American Hustle The Quintessential Look of the 70s

Not since Boogie Nights has a movie captured the opulence and fashions of the 1970s as authentically as David O. Russell’s American Hustle. Costume designer Michael Wilkinson and production designer Judy Beker transport us back to the disco era in this period piece, loosely based on real events. Starring Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Renner and Christian Bale, American Hustle is a veritable style compendium of 1970s fashion, the backdrop for a highly entertaining and engaging American crime drama replete with glamour, espionage, FBI ops, Mafia, hucksters and con artists. This is a movie with so much to it that seeing it once is just not enough. The 70s is fully re-imagined with quintessential fashion statements; iconic style pieces like the Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress, tinted lenses, oversized glasses, plunging necklines, hoop and pendant earrings, wide lapels, the 3 piece suit, ties, high boots, oxfords, the trimmed beard, mustache and tight curls and big hair.

Award winning costume designer Michael Wilkinson blends vintage pieces with his own custom creations to create the ultra glamorous looks that adorn Adams and Lawrence in the film. Some of the vintage pieces included in the film are the green and white Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress pictured below and this leather Halston dress, both worn by Amy Adams.

Smokey eyes, bold blush and curls of all sizes polish off Lawrence and Adams’ looks. American Hustle hair stylist Katherine Gordon, and makeup artist Evelyne Noraz made sure no detail was overlooked when it came to authentically representing 1970’s beauty. Strongly contoured cheeks, grey and blue smokey eyes and glossy looks typify the era. Adams’ long flowing locks are styled in a number of looks, ranging from the Farrah “hot roller” waves, to tight curls. Lawrence’s housewife character on the other hand, sported a sophisticated updo.
