The State of Summer Gaming (Handhelds)

Roses are red Violets are blue my Vita is dead my iPad is too Xbox fucked up and Sony did too I won’t be playing games this summer, And neither will you!

Gaming is in a perilous place this summer. E3 showed us just how ready the big three console companies are for the next generation of consoles to hit, or wait maybe it’s that WE are ready and the industry giants are clinging to what is now OLD CRAP. That’s right; Microsoft’s Xbox 360 is ancient, Nintendo’s Wii is long dead and Sony’s PS3 is winding down.

Maybe I should be a little less hard on Sony, after all the PS3 does have some kick left in it; The Last Of Us, Sly Cooper and let’s hope to god The Last Guardian too (If it EVER gets released). However, my Vita is utterly useless right now and that’s what I wanna rant on: Portable gaming – which is no more prominent, greater, or for some of us: needed than it is in the summer.

If Sony had starved me on titles like the 3DS did at launch I might be a little more satisfied with it, but i’m starting to feel like that massive launch was a big bait and switch. Outside of Uncharted: Golden Abyss I haven’t had one experience in the Vita that I can truly call extraordinary or original. It’s the most powerful gaming handheld ever but that doesn’t make a dent when there are no goddamn games to gush over. A big pretty screen, that’s what I love most about my Vita; for someone with enormous fingers it is a delight. However, unfortunately even that is starting to fall to the wayside as I find myself drooling over the 3DS XL which gives me that big screen and physical size that my enormous hands require. Also comparatively the 3DS is going strong with tons of quality and lasting titles.

What the hell is it about this thing that is scaring away the developers; the PSP is alive and well in Japan? C’mon that can’t be the only reason! OR maybe it is and I’m deluding myself thinking that anything but Monster Hunter could float the system. In any case I think I have played my 3DS about ten times as much as I have my Vita and I’m the guy that was ranting and raving about the Vita killing the stupid 3D gimmick with console gameplay on a handheld. What a sucker, huh?
