This past February, Hollywood  lost a bright light when Oscar award winning costume designer,Eiko Ishioka passed away from pancreatic cancer. She was best known for her imaginative and sensuous costume design in Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula. Eiko won Oscars for Dracula and her work for the 2000 Jennifer Lopez sci-fi thriller, “The Cell” and her last film, “Immortals”.

MyEtvmedia caught up with Nick Verreos at the FIDM for a closer look at Ishioka’s final filmImmortals, a spectacular take on the story of the Greek gods.The over-all design concepts for Immortals was influenced by epic wars of antiquity and stylized, mythical characters. Although the film was met with lackluster reviews, Ishioka’s costume designs stand alone as magnificent pieces that push the imagination’s boundaries to make the gods of Immortals more fantastical than ever before depicted in Hollywood. Particularly stunning is the King Hyperion’s (Mickey Rouke) crystal mask and the beauty of the youthful gods in their magnificent costumes on fabulous sets breathing life into otherwise old tales.

“I want to get out the traditional, research visual, historical work. Instead we can create our own unique mythology and vision. This of course is my attitude,[sic] the audience is not a historian, or a history channel audience they’re expecting excitement. [sic] It’s a very interesting edge between a historical research and a very far out idea. I want it [my designs] to be able to stand on two legs. One side being very far out and one very traditional, historical research side” -
