“The Santa Clause” is a charming, if mild, fantasy, distinguished by a gentle directorial touch that strikes an adroit balance between dramatic and fantastic elements. At the heart of the film are engaging performances by the two male leads Tim Allen(TV sitcom “Home Improvement”) and young Eric Lloyd (Charlie Calvin). Scott Allen (Tim Allen) inadvertently kills Santa onChristmas Eve, he finds himself magically recruited to take his place. While the film breaks no new ground, it offers the kind of simple, well-crafted, family entertainment.
