Promised Land, a new contemporary drama directed by Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting, Milk). Promised Land explores America at the crossroads where big business and the strength of small-town community converge. Matt Damon (Steve Butler) is an ace corporate salesman who along with corporate associate, Sue Thomason (Frances McDormand) is to close a deal in a key rural town in western Pennsylvania. The town has been hit hard by the economic decline in recent years. The two outsiders see the local citizens as very likely to accept their company’s offer for drilling rights on their properties. What seems like an easy job takes a different turn when a respected school teacher (Hal Holbrook), a grassroots campaign led by another man (John Krasinski), and a local woman (Rosemarie DeWitt) all put up resistance.
