This Year In Film: 4 Upcoming Movies Based on Young Adult Novels

Posted 10 years ago by myetvmedia

After the box office success of “Twilight” and “The Hunger Games”, it’s no surprise that Hollywood studios rushed to buy the film rights to all of the most spectacular literary works for the teen audience. Nowadays the Young Adult genre is reaching a peak of cultural significance and more and more directors and screenwriters are turning to Young Adult literature for inspiration and adjusting them for a big screen.

This year we were introduced to a world of magic in “Beautiful Creatures”, met a charming zombie-boy “R” played by Nicolas Holt in ‘Warm Bodies”, and experienced an amazing journey with alien named “Wanderer” from the Stephanie Meyer latest hit “The Host”. This is only the beginning. To help better prepare you for what’s to come, here’s a preview of 4 upcoming movies based on Young Adult novels that you should see in 2013.

1.”Percy Jackson: The Sea of Monsters” by Rick Riordan

Release date: August 7, 2013
Studio: 20th Century Fox
Director: Thor Freudenthal
Starring: Logan Lerman, Brandon T. Jackson, Alexandra Daddario, Douglas Smith, Mary Birdsong, Yvette Nicole Brown, Missi Pyle, Nathan Fillion, Anthony Head, Paloma Kwiatkowski, Leven Rambin, Stanley Tucci

Logan Lerman returns as the son of Poseidon in the second book from ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ series. This time Persy and his demigod friends are going on a journey to find his satyr friend Grover and save their Camp Half-Blood. Someone had poisoned the sacred tree of Thalia, and this means that the protection of the camp is about to fall down and nothing will be able to keep the monsters from invading. The magical Tree can only be healed by mythical Golden Fleece, hidden on the island of Polyphemus – and to get there, you need to cross the Sea of Monsters and fight with its inhabitants – Scylla and Charybdis, the sweet sirens and tricky enchantress Circe.

2. “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” by Cassandra Clare

Release date: August 23, 2013
Studio: Screen Gems (Sony Pictures)
Director: Harald Zwart
Starring: Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Robert Sheehan, Lena Headey, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Kevin Zegers

Lily Collins (“Mirror Mirror”) and Jamie Campbell Bower (“Twilight,” “Harry Potter”) looking promising in the ‘City of Bones’ , the first installment of the ‘Mortal Instruments’ book series by Cassandra Clare. Riddle, charisma, mysticism and romance – the optimal set of elements to delight the hearts of teenage girls. Bower has already “lit up” in supporting roles in major franchises of the last decade, and Collins is seen by producers as a promising new star. To give future franchise respectability, producers invited to the project prominent actors of the successful adult series – Lena Headey (‘Game of Thrones’) and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers (‘The Tudors’). The story is set in contemporary New York, where a seemingly ordinary teenage girl, Clary Fray (Lilly Collins), discovers that she is a Shadowhunter, a half-angel warrior dedicated to slay the demons. We already seen such plots on TV (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”), and now they’re entering the big screen. So let’s wait and see how it goes and it’s not much of a waiting left, movie hits theaters this summer.
