The Secret World of Arrietty

It’s evident that the English translation of the script was given the upmost attention with all dialogue making an effective impact, which is a common trait with Miyazaki films. Despite Shaun and Arrietty’s size difference the story manages to keep a sense of danger present for both characters simultaneously which could be difficult considering thatArrietty’s “tiny person” problems are vastly different from Shaun’s “Human size” issues.  Regardless of the obstacles Shaun and Arrietty persevere and their friendship touches your heart without trite storytelling.

The attention to detail is marvelous, with every doorknob and staircase made of hardware nails perfectly in proportion to Arrietty and her family.  I found myself drawn into a world where water dripped into mugs in large, slow dollops, sewing pins were used as swords and dollhouse construction was that of luxurious architecture.  Once the plot revs up the story becomes the main focus and I really enjoyed the elements of action and adventure juxtaposed against a canvas of a cozy cottage and a serene summer garden.

“The Secret World Of Arrietty” is an animated fantasy film and the latest creation from renowned writer and director, Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibil. Written by Hayao Miyazaki and Keiko Niwa the story is based on Mary Norton‘s novel ‘The Borrowers’. This is Hironasa Yonebayaski directorial debut. It is a tale of Arrietty (voiced by Bridgit Mendler), a doll sized girl and her family who live under the floorboards of a human home. Arrietty forms a friendship with a “human bean” Shaun and the story takes us through their friendship and the dangers that the humans pose to Arrietty and her family. Overall:

“The Secret World Of Arrietty” is an animated jewel although less impressive then previous Miyazaki films. It was a sheer delight to watch. Because of the impressive art direction I’d advise to see it in theatres to experience every minute detail in all of its glory. I’d recommend this to fans of Miyazaki’s previous work and anyone who wants to feel warm and fuzzy inside for two hours. Miyazaki has set the bar so high with his previous films that this is just a tiny bit less amazing.
