This movie will not appeal to everyone. Although the character of The Master is possibly based on Ron Hubbard and his self-help Dianetics, Anderson says that is merely a vehicle to provide a character of great enough charisma and a context in this era and setting where the dynamism between the two men would be believable.

Paul Anderson chose to make the film in 70mm, despite the technical difficulties of shooting in this format. The result is exquisite and immediate and it is a truly lush cinematic experience.
