Scream 4 Review

9/10

The expectations around the release of Scream 4 were very high and as with the previous parts of the series Wes Craven did not disappoint.

The story is simple and may seem a bit cliché but that is the idea of the series.  As before Craven created an interesting and disturbing world driven by the rules of B-class horror. But do not be mistaken – Scream 4 is definitely an A-class movie. Don’t expect an existential indie drama cause that’s just not the point. It’s about fun, it’s about fear and it’s about laugh!

Our favorite characters come back to face yet another serial killer. Ghostface finds new way to kill his victims and this time everything is captured on the camera. Welcome to the modern horror – the rules are changed. The ‘master of horror’ makes us jump in our chairs using the tools of suspense and mystery. I was pleased seeing (female) members of the audience biting their fingers and covering their eyes a few times.

Not to spoil too much Sydney comes back to Woodsborro to promote her new book. She managed to survive the trauma from before and seems to be even stronger. Gale and Dewe are married and going through a relationship crisis. High-school kids are partying and being ‘innocent’ and Sydney’s cousin is the sweetest girl on the planet. Then the killings begin… Oh and did I mention that it’s the anniversary of the original Woodsboro murderers? You can pretty much imagine the rest.

Story wise it’s a typical three-act Hollywood movie with some descent twists and red herrings. Far from Hitchcock but as for modern cinema still pretty damn good! It’s good to see a ‘scary movie’ that’s not about torture and pure violence.

Acting is mostly good – as long as nobody expects an Oscar-worthy performance. The cast of characters is very diverse. On top of Sydney, Gale and Dewe being older and experienced we get introduced to younger generation of easy victims. They die often and violently. There is more blood then before but not nearly enough to match films like Saw or Hostel – and I mean it as a good thing.

Music is very pleasing – nothing fancy but does the job and helps to build up the scary atmosphere. Often being used as the actual scare as to be expected from this kind of movie. But don’t expect any hits for you iPod playlist.
