Like their fans, metal musicians have a clear sense of musical identity. By constantly reassessing the boundaries of their music, heavy metal has shown exponential growth in musicianship; something that could not have occurred if the media had greater control of the genre. This has allowed for the birth of sub-genres such as Death-Grind, Crossover Thrash, and yes, even Djent.  As silly as a classification may seem, it allows both the fan and musician to gain control of an element of their life. For some, this is the only control they will ever have.

Metal’s evolution is dependent on the open-mindedness of its fan base.  And if the next 40 years are as insane as the last, we are in for quite the ride.  Horns up, Metal Heads – our Metal Evolution has arrived.
