‘Les Miserables’ Musical Hit or Miss: Review

The Inn Keeper Thénardier (Sacha Baron Cohen) and Madame Thénardier (Helena Bonham Carter) provide ongoing hilarity and colour to the movie. Two scenes are truly inspired, really funny and provide necessary comic relief. The scene with the Inn Keeper and Mme Thénardier singing and dancing while deftly picking everyone’s pocket at their high quality establishment and once again when they arrive in style uninvited to the wedding for the same caper are memorable.

I am a great fan of Russell Crowe (Javert) but it was quite an adjustment to see this imposing figure and then hear a much less imposing voice than the one one would expect from this man of the law. Hugh Jackman is brilliant but his voice is small in comparison to the great strength of his character. One is just left wishing someone would really belt out the songs with the depth of feeling they deserve.

‘Les Mis’ has been nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award, and has 7 other Oscar noms including best song for “Suddenly”. The ‘Les Mis’ song album has reached No. 1 Spot on the Billboard 200 chart this week (92,000) copies sold! Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway have both received Oscar nominations. The Brits are really in love with this movie giving it 9 BAFTA nominations placing it just behind Lincoln.
