I’ve Loved You So Long A masterful script, written by first time director Philippe Claudel, is preformed to perfection by Kristen Scott Thomas and Elsa Zylberstein. This captivating film elevates the genre of family drama with its nuanced examination of the complexities of relationships and its question; what would one do for love? How far would one go for love?

The film revolves around Juliette (Scott Thomas), a woman whose past is shrouded in mystery. The opening scene is an awkward reunion between two sisters: Juliette who is quiet, reserved and stoic; and Lea (Zylberstein) who is younger, exuberant and expressive. Juliette has returned to live with her sister after a long absence: from where she has come and why are questions yet to be answered. What follows is Juliette’s gradual reintegration back into the family and this new life.

It is during this reintegration that we begin to learn of the various losses sustained by each of the characters. The audience is offered small glimpses into the personal tragedies of both main and supporting characters, and how their experiences have had lasting effects on their lives. It is worth noting that these revelations are not handled in an exploitative Hollywood manner, but rather discoveries are made through quiet coincidence or casual revelation, which adds an extra touch of finesse to an already subtle film.

I’ve Loved You So Long is a very well made film from all perspectives: the script, acting and directing are exceptional and the cinematographer does not miss an opportunity to hone in on the delicacy of Kristen Scott Thomas’ acting ability with many close-ups. The characters are compelling—even captivating—as we watch them perform ordinarily mundane tasks and during the crescendo of emotional outbursts. The editing is well paced contributing to the overall magnetism of the film, and the music, while unusual, does in fact complement what the audience sees. I’ve Loved You So Long is a definite accomplishment for Claudel and absolutely worth seeing.
