On the other hand, we visit for the first time (never filmed before) a camp for young girls run by the militant fundamentalist movement. Through indoctrination sessions designed to make women subservient to men, girls learn how to fight against Islam, Christianity andWestern influences by any means necessary.

The World Before Her sweeps back the curtain to reveal the intimate stories of young women. Hindu fundamentalists view pageants and their “International” beauty standards as immoral and a symbol of the rapid Westernization of India; protests and vandalisms are common.

Moving between the transformative action at both camps and the characters’ private lives, The World Before Her creates a lively, human, provocative portrait of the world’s largest democracy at a critical transitional moment. These young women may represent opposing extremes but in their hearts they share a common dream: to help shape the future of India as she meets the world before her.

Meanwhile in Mamelodi

Hot Docs – Christophe Chanel

South Africa 2010. Director Benjamin Kahlmeyer give us a close up shot on how close can one be to the World Soccer Cup celebrations without really being a part of it. Meanwhile in Mamelodi is a wistful, colorful, cinematic portrait of the lovable Mtsweni family set in District 11, one of many districts in the Mamelodi Township, near Pretoria.  District 11 is a blacks-only township where people still make do without paved roads, electricity or running water.

The father Steven Mtsweni likes to encourage himself daily by singing Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday till Friday, each and every morning, good morning boss…” as he puts all his energy into his small kiosk located in his township, keeping his family afloat and enabling his children an education “ I manage my people, my children”.

Meanwhile the world is having fun watching the world cup. The Mtsweni follows the competition through radio broadcasts and on their antique black-and-white TV. One of the most captivating moments is the ecstasy in Steven’s face when South Africa scores the first goal of the world cup!

Meanwhile in Mamelodi shows the lives of ordinary people who must hustle to get by.  For example Steven’s 17 years old daughter“Moskito” describe herself as a child of the post-Apartheid generation and dreams of being a soccer professional or a paleontologist. She is looking for a way out of poverty being part of the new generation that believes in the chance of a career and a better life.
