Homefront

Homefront directed by Gary Fleder and adapted by Slyvester Stallone is based on Chuck Logan’s novel of the same name. The crime thriller set in the south stars Jason Statham, James Franco, Kate Bosworth, Winona Ryder and Omar Benson Miller. Franco‘s character is thoroughly detestable so when he gets punched in the face by Statham it is a very satisfying moment in the film.

After a successful drugs bust, DEA agent Phil Broker (Staham) goes into witness protection with his daughter. Unfortunately, he runs into some trouble when Gator, a local meth dealer and wannabe kingpin (Franco) takes an interest in the stranger who just walked into town.

The movie manages to balance the joy of Broker’s happy family life and the sticky unpleasantness of methheads and corrupt officials in the humid bayou setting. It has a surprisingly good cast, many of them playing against type (Kate Bosworth’s physical change into a strung out junkie is especially impressive) with great support from Winona Ryder and Omar Benson Miller as Gator’s girlfriend and Broker’s best friend who both get some fun material to play with.

And of course Statham punches Franco in the face. He punches a lot of people in the face. The action is brutally fast and furious, from a punch-up at a gas station to Statham kicking ass with both hands tied to some home invaders getting a vicious beat down.

It’s an entertaining action flick with great turns by all. If you’re a fan of Statham, it’s a must-see.
