Much has happened in Game of Thrones Season 2, HBO’s David Benioff and D. B. Weiss’s TV adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s book A Song of Ice and Fire. The greatly anticipated Season 3 Premiere is finally here but can we remember where everything was left months ago? Here is a quick guide to the main characters and the turning points of the story so far.
1. Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance) is now Hand of the King, to King Joffery of the House of Lannister.
2. The House of Lannister and the House of Tyrell control King’s Landing after the battle of Blackwater. The House of Tyrell sent reinforcements at the end of the battle and gained the favour of the Lannisters.
3. Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) has escaped from Harrenhal with the help of Gendry (Joe Dempsie); Jaqen H’ghar The Faceless Man leaves Arya with a special coin if she ever needs to summon him again.
4. Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) is stripped of all power and left with a monstrously scarred face as thanks from his own sister Cersei Lannister (Lena Heady)for winning the Blackwater battle and saving King’s Landing.
5. Robb Stark (Richard Madden) King of the North, has married Lady Talisa (the beautiful medic) breaking his promise to Walder Frey, which will have dire consequences.
6. Jamie Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) is still Brienne of Tarth’s (Gwendoline Christie) prisoner after Lady Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley) unwisely let him go free.
7. Bran is on the run with Ashia & Hoderwere.
8. Jon Snow (Kit Harington) is at the Wildling Camp of Mance Rayder with Ygritte (Rose Leslie)
9. Khaleesi Daenarys (Emilia Clarke) “Mother of Dragons,” is the ruler Harth. Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen) is still in the company of Khaleesi Daenarys who is gaining power with her dragons.
10. Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) is no longer betroved to Joffrey as a result of the clever manipulation of his mother Cersei Lannister’s (Lena Heady)
11. Joffrey (Jack Gleeson) is still King of the Seven Kingdoms, put there by his mother after the murder of Robert Baratheon in Season 1. He was engaged to Sansa Stark (whose father Ned Stark, he had beheaded for treason) but is now engaged to Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer) Ser Loras Tyrell’s sister.
12. Littlefinger (Aiden Gillen) is now Lord of Harrenhal, and he is determined to protect Sansa Stark.
13. Balance of power: The House of Lannister has defeated the House of Baratheon and Joffrey Lannister sits on the Iron Throne.
14. A zombie army – the White Walkers is amassing in the north beyond The Wall.
15. Theon, the son of Balon Greyjoy, King of the Iron Islands seized Winterfell but after defending it with only 20 men against a Stark army of 500 is dragged back to the Iron Islands. Winterfell is burned. Theon is estranged from his own father failed miserably to prove himself worthy of his family.
16. Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dilane) has survived his massive naval defeat in Blackwater Bay and the sorceress Melisandre (Carice van Houten) is still predicting he will be king.
17. Bran (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) and Rickon Stark, the young sons of the slain Ned Stark, once Hand of the King and Lord of Winterfell, escape again.
