Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav Review

So what is that sets chains of satinav apart from adventure game x,y and z? the story and the visuals. Chains of satinav is mechanically a very sound game but its strongest suit lies in its presentation. The game features hand drawn environments that feature a sort of subtle movement, flags blowing in the wind, water flowing, wheels turning. None of that sounds too remarkable on its own but when you are faced with what is essentially a very beautiful high resolution painting with twenty or thirty of these moving pieces you can’t help but appreciate the polish on the decidedly old school aesthetic. The game was developed by germans and I’m sure the native voice acting is superb. However the english voice acting is getting some flak for being a little cheesy, personally I like it but a lot of people don’t so be sure to check out some trailers and make up your own mind. The characters however are undeniably fantastic. The story that this game has to tell is of the high fantasy ilk and while that may seem overdone, especially within this genre it is truly fantastic and I put it right up there with quest for glory or monkey island. Though it features a more serious tone than either of those games. Its a classic coming of age story with a young man bound to a young girl and blah blah blah…just check it out it’s good. Thematically it succeeds, the characters are relatable and sincere and the world draws a medieval fantasy portrait in tune with classical euro reads like the witcher. SatiNav doesn’t give you more than you can handle, its not kings quest 1. You get three or four screens of puzzles before moving onto the next area, and the game drops enough clues that you won’t be stuck for too long.

Satinav is a fantastic adventure game. At full price it may seem expensive for an adventure game but genre fans cannot miss this. And I’m sure any avid reader will feel right at home with the story that truly brings character and classic fantasy to life. Lets hope deadlic entertainment is already hard at work on a sequel.
