Bridesmaids features two best friends who have grown up together, and now, Lillian (Maya Rudolf: Grown Ups, Saturday Night Live) is getting married, and Annie (Kristen Wiig: Knocked Up, Saturday Night Live) is dubbed the Maid of Honour. However, things never seem to go as planned. Annie is caught up in her own problems: a failed bakery, an emotionless relationship, and a fear of men and commitment. She manages to mess up every event planned for the wife-to-be, who decides to take the Maid of Honour position away from Annie and give it to her new best friend – the rich and always perfect-looking Helen (Rose Byrne: Get Him to the Greek, 28 Weeks Later, Knowing).

Annie gets pulled over by an Irish cop, Rhodes (Chris O’Dowd), for having broken taillights. The two of them hit it off and he gains her affection by showing her that not all guys are arrogant assholes. Annie still has many predicaments to face as she tries to cover the expenses and duties that come with a best friend’s wedding.

The movie’s attempt at a female version of The Hangover was blatantly obvious. The gang ends up in Las Vegas for the bride’s last single weekend before her wedding. The bride almost doesn’t make it to her own wedding… for more feminine reasons, though, like emotional reflection. Even some of the characters reflect the original Hangover cast; Zach Galifianakis made his debut as the out-of-place, overweight Alan Garner who is constantly adding comic relief through hilarious mishaps. In Bridesmaids, Melissa McCarthy takes on his counter-part; her role as Megan, a loud and boisterous relative of the groom, is exactly the same as Zach’s. While it was entertaining, having a more original plot and set of characters would have allowed the movie to stand beside The Hangover instead of behind it.

Overall, the movie was definitely a lot of fun to watch. Each scene kept rolling for a little longer than expected which added room for a few more laughs. There were a couple of scenes where the entire audience couldn’t stop laughing! My favourite scene was when Kristen Wiig was trying to get the cop’s attention by committing countless illegal antics such as speeding, drifting her car, littering, texting and talking while driving, and pretending to drink from a bottle of beer. If you are looking for an entertaining comedy to see with your friends, Bridesmaids should be at the top of your list. After not wanting to see the film from watching the trailer, it was surely a nice surprise.
