The painting made of Dido Elizabeth Belle and her cousin Elizabeth Murray in 1779 hangs at Scone Palace in Perth, Scotland, and is owned by the present Earl of Mansfield. It was exhibited in Kenwood House in 2007 during an exhibition complimenting events marking the bicentenary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act 1807.
Many recent films about slavery have been violent. This avoids graphic violence and explicit sex and is a cinematic delight. “Belle” is thoroughly captivating and will appeal to a general audience.
