Official Game Trailer & Behind the Scenes Developers’ Diary

Previewed at E3 by myETVmedia and it looks awesome!

‘Awe-inspiring’, based on one of the best-known, golden era, sci fi classics The War of the Worlds is reinvented today by Paramount Game for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network Xbox. When H.G. Wells, famous science fiction novel The War of the Worlds (1898) was aired on radio it shocked the world. Meet the developers behind the new game.

“Developed in conjunction with Paramount Digital Entertainment, The War of the Worlds is a dark and breathtaking new vision inspired by the classic H.G. Wells novel, retold as a single player, 2D action-adventure and narrated by the acclaimed and distinguished actor Sir Patrick Stewart. Set in London, the gameplay narrative parallels the timeline and events from the 1953 movie adaptation, but introduces a new story arc, characters, locations, and sub-plots. With gameplay paying homage to classic cinematic platformers such as Flashback, Out of This World and Prince of Persia, the game follows the exploits of an unknown everyman struggling to escape the Martian invasion of London and rescue his family. Forced to think through insurmountable odds, players will outsmart an army of alien tripods, spiders and drones as they make their way through a landscape of total devastation.”

Mike Mika, head of development for Other Ocean Interactive and creative Director from Paramount, Lee Cummings explain the technical aspect of making this unique 2D side scrolling game. They both agree “from day one we wanted to create a game that was an homage to some of the older 16-bit style games; One of the best thing about those games is that you die often. If you get shot your are dead, there no health bar”. To their point that’s what makes this game so interesting.

The developers have chosen to go with 2D; 3D would have been easier and faster. Most games now use MOCAP and 3D model animation. The War of the Worlds includes rotoscoped graphic and parallax features. In old school terms parallax means the element in the background appears to move slower then the element in the foreground. The challenge is that every element has to be placed very specifically. It needs to be given a soar value and a parallax value. This game has about 250 available lairs of parallax, when old games had only 4 lairs. It truly gives you the feeling of 3D when it ‘s not. The War of the Worlds seems to have every facet needed for a solid storytelling game that delivers action.
