Woody Harrelson’s Haymitch Abernathy, the drunken mentor is a likeable character with a degree of sincerity that is touching. We want to see more of him. Donald Sutherland as President Coriolus Snow who rules with an iron fist in a silk glove comes across as a very disturbing and ruthless character. Young actors on the screen with admirable performances are Primrose (Willow Shields) and Amandla Stenberg (Rue) but unfortunately Rue has been killed off.
The casting for this screen adaptation is definitely the right one. Top marks for settings, costume, makeup, special effects, stunt work and music.
The film adaptation is a well executed and visually appealing capturing moments of drama and propelling along the high-stakes action. Its intensity level is captivating but must meet the constraints of a PG-13 rating. The book, on the other hand, has no such limitations and has the power to allow you to express your most vivid imagination. Despite the tremendous book sales The Hunger Games did not win theKids Choice 2012 Favourite Book award this year, which went to Diary of A Wimpy Kid. For your money The Hunger Games is a truly entertaining movie event and a book series worth reading. Kudos to Suzanne Collins.
