True Romance (1993) relying on the exuberant Qeuntin Tarantino script, and a stellar cast including Christopher Walken, Dennis Hopper, Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette, Brad Pitt, Val Kilmer, Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson and James Gandolfini, nonetheless required the skill and creativity of Tony Scott to bring the far flung story and its characters into sharp focus while letting the pell-mell characters unfold with an authenticity that even Tarantino rarely achieves under his own direction. Certainly, the one scene between retired cop Clifford Worley (Dennis Hopper) and Mafiosi Vincenzo Coccotti (Christopher Walken) stands as one of the best ever made on film.
Tony Scott should always be remembered and respected as a great Director and no less than half of Scott Free’s contribution to filmmaking. Brother Ridley Scott and millions of moviegoers are grateful I’m sure for an extraordinary life in the movies well lived.
