Reboots: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Sailor Moon & Ender’s Game

Posted 12 years ago by myetvmedia

Iconic characters and stories from cartoons, films, television shows and novels from the late 80’s and ‘90’s are about to get a massive reboot. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Sailor Moon and Ender’s Game are three of the biggest tickets from the 90’s coming to the silver screen.

Ender’s Game

The novel and sci-fi cult-hit Enders Gamewinner of the Hugo (1986) and Nebula Awards (1985) is the story of an intergalactic fleet school and its enigmatic child prodigy, the gifted Andrew “Ender” Wiggin. “Ender” has been programmed from birth and is now chosen to be the general that will save the world, a futuristic world engaged in a hundred year war. Penned by Orson Scott Card (1985) the story maintained it’s strong following. Gavin Hood has written the screenplay for the Hollywood blockbuster adaptation to be released this November. There are already several fan made trailers available. The movie will be a fusion of “Enders Game’ and it’s parallel novel ‘Enders Shadow”. The film is directed by Gavin Hood and stars Asa Butterfield as Hugo, Harrison Ford as Colonel Graff, Sir Ben Kingsley, Hailee Steinfeld, Viola Davis and Abigail Breslin.

TMNT Remake

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; The ‘Ninja Turtles’ Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael will be back April 2014 in a high tech remake of this 1990’s fan favourite. The 4 Ninja’s named after Renaissance artists live in the storm sewers of NYC. They are heroes who emerge to battle evil from the streets or the cosmos. Directed by Jonathan Liebesman (The Killing Room, Battle Los Angeles, Wrath of the Titans) production is set to begin shortly. The only role cast so far is that of Megan Fox who will play April O’Neil. This casting choice has us a wee-bit skeptical of the entire project (actually a lot skeptical). However our fears of lame casting choices have been overwhelmed by our concerns about the motion capture technology that will be used to re-create the turtles. The VFX used in Avatar and planned for TMNT might be a little jarring to those of us who originally fell in love with the animatronic puppeteering of the 90’s. ‘Cause comes on, that was pretty cool’.

Sailor Moon Re-Boot

When the popular Japanese anime series, Sailor Moon hit North America it blew up with young girls everywhere. Suddenly schoolyards were full of little girls running around, yelling “Moon Prism Power!” Now those little girls, grown up are rejoicing as the series celebrates its 20th Anniversary. Creator Naoko Takeuchi has announced that the series will get a reboot this coming summer, and not just a one-off film reboot, but an entire serialized show!  Original voice actors, Kotono Mitsuishi (voice actor of Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon) and Toru Furuya (voice actor of Mamoru Chiba/Tuxedo Mask) are also set to return. While it may be socially unacceptable to run around, pretending to fight evil – all of us will secretly be thinking that in the name of the moon, I will punish you…’ any time someone gets in the way with watching this series.

With these 90′s favourites getting a reboot, we can’t help but wonder what’s next? Maybe a reboot of the fireside kids horror classic “Are You Afraid of the Dark” or a Gargoyles live-action? Right now I’ve got the nostalgic tingly feeling in my toes and I can’t wait for what’s next. Let us know which 90′s classic you are dying to see a reboot of?
