New York rapper, Joey Bada$$, has blown up in the past year. It all started with his video for Survival Tactics, which was a youthful tribute to the streets of New York, a terrific beginning to a promising future. At such a young age, (17) Joey manages to flow better than most rappers that have a decade on him. His New-York-Style flow is exceptional, following in the footsteps of his idol and New York native Nas. Joey’s lyricism surpasses almost every other rapper that has been making it big in the past year. He raised his crew, Pro Era, to new heights, when he captured a spot on the XXL Freshmen list. It is only upwards from here for Joey as he continues to produce quality music with his old-school style. But even though Joey relies on his old-school qualities to seize an audience seeking Hip-Hop nostalgia, he still manages to bring something new to the table by rapping over experimental beats: on his popular mixtape 1999 he raps over MF DOOM and J Dilla beats, who are some of hip-hop’s most important experimentalists. Joey Bada$$ is a radical breathe of fresh air, so if you are at all a fan of hip-hop don’t disregard this new talent.
