Most Anticipated Graphic Novels 2013 P4

Here is Part 4 the conclusion of myETVmedia’s 4 part series looking at the amazing comics hitting shelves this year. We have gone ahead and highlighted our picks for the comics and graphic novels you should be looking out for. Part 1 includes: Deva Zan and The Wake.  Part 2: Invincible, East of West, Sandman.  Part 3: Largo Winch Vol. 11, Valerian and Laureline Vol 5, and Trillium. Part 4: Thorgal Vol. 14: Giants finally our no.1 pic Saga by Brian K Vaughan and Fiona Staples.

2. Thorgal Vol. 14: Giants by Jean Van Hamme and Grzegorz Rosinski

Giants is an apt title for this volume. With Thorgal, Van Hamme and Rosinski not only provided a long and engaging adventure strip but also pushed the envelope by allowing the overarching drama of the Thorgal series to slowly build. The building of a mythic and heroic character has plenty of room for failure and surprisingly Van Hamme and Rosinski succeed where nearly everyone else has failed. Thorgal never fails to entertain or to seem realistic in the portrayal of its characters as flawed human beings. With every volume we see more of the fantastic world in which these characters live and more of classic folk literature and fairy tale is brought into its fold. For Thorgal all of these fantastical elements exist to empower the basic human story underneath it all and that all continues in this amazing volume, the ongoing English localization of Thorgal by Cinebook could not be fast enough. Thorgal Volume14Giants hits in April.

1. Saga by Brian K Vaughan and Fiona Staples

Y The Last Man was a landmark work. A piece of comic book history that could not be topped in terms of scale, plot or raw emotion.

There was much hype and worry for Vaughan‘s next project. But with Saga he has done it again providing a completely unique and engaging story (and world) to sink our teeth into.Saga has completed its first arc and has been collected in a first volume. But Volume 2 continues this year and absolutely cannot be missed. When I read Y The Last Man (all of it) over the course of a week, I spent a lot of time wondering how great it must have been to talk and hypothesize while the series was running, all those mysteries, all those possibilities… and here they are again with Saga. Don’t miss it not just because it’s an amazing graphic novel but also because its a great conversation piece.
