Jean Paul Gaultier: Fashion Innovator, Trendsetter, Genius

Jean Paul Gaultier is a flamboyant, daring fashion innovator, a genius not afraid to shake up the status quo. He continues to have a global influence on fashion, culture, film, art, theatre and social media that has spanned decades. Gaultier is a humanist with a keen eye for cultural distinctions, individuality and counter culture which he combines with a unique eclectic sense of reinterpreting fashion. Gaultier started his career in the back streets of Paris and his ‘odyssey’ has taken him around the world. He achieved international star status during the 80’s and 90’s which continues to this day. Jean Paul Gautier at 59 is at the top of his profession. The new international ‘fashion art show’ created by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) in collaboration with the Maison Jean Paul Gaultier “The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From The Sidewalk to the Catwalk” is a fabulous celebration of his work.

Gaultier is intimately involved with the world of film and theatre, most recently contributing to Almodovar’s film “The Skin I Live In” featured at both TIFF and NYFF and starring Antonio Banderas. During the 80’s and 90’s, he daringly designed the infamous cone bra and corsets for Madonna for her 1990 Blond Ambition World Tour and put David Beckham in a sarong. Gaultier has had an extensive impact in many areas including runway shows, film, stage costumes, photos, television shows, videos, dance, concerts and international performances. He is now the focus of a documentary by Farida Khelfa (one of his former models and muses) that recently premiered at the Rio Film Festival. He has recently been spotted in conversation with Lady Gaga.

World Premiere and World Tour:

“The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From The Sidewalk to the Catwalk” had its World Premiere at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal) this summer. The show was initiated and produced by the MMFA in collaboration with the Maison Jean Paul Gaultier. Opening in June 2011, The ‘Gaultier Show’ was hugely successful drawing large international crowds and media attention. The Gaultier Show continues on its international tour to the Dallas Museum of Art (November 13, 2011 – February 12, 2012), The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, de Young (March 24 – August 19, 2012), the Fundación Mapfre – Instituto de Cultura, Madrid (September 26 – November 18, 2012), and The Kunsthal Rotterdam, the Netherlands (February 9 – May 12, 2013).
