Haywire

Oscar winning director Steven Soderbergh knows how to tell a gripping, chilling tale of murder, international espionage and betrayal. Haywire is one of the most anticipated dramas to hit the theaters this week. Starring Gina Carano (Mallory), Ewan McGregor (Kenneth) and Michael Fassbender (Paul) along with Michael Douglas, Channing Tatum and Antonio Banderas this ‘kick ass’ line up of stars are bound to bring some thrills to the screen. The high caliber talent on this movie is a testament to Soderbergh’s great track record in the film world (winner 22 awards, nominated for 43 others) and his determination to shake things up (Traffic; Erin Brockovich; Sex, Lies and Videotape).

The simple description of the movie line “a black ops super soldier seeks payback after she is betrayed during a mission” (IMDB) lets us know we are entering new territory. A woman betrayed is a woman to fear.  Gina Carano is new to the silver screen as the lead protagonist but she is a former American Gladiators star she has a lot of experience (can hold her own with Hulk Hogan) on camera and knows how to handle the rough stuff. In fact she rather likes a good fight and enjoyed making this movie immensely. In addition she is lethally attractive.

Things heat up immediately on screen as Tatum Channing tries her on. The movie was mainly filmed in Ireland for about $25 million, not a huge budget these days. The great thing about this movie is you will appreciate a woman playing fight scenes who actually understands that world. Soderbergh took a big chance bringing a no name actor into this picture but it was the right choice. The story is well told and so there will be no spoiling the plot here. Suspense is what you pay for.
