Fashion in Film: Breakfast At Tiffany’s (1961)

Holly remains chic, whether she is wearing one of the Givenchy dresses or her nightwear: tuxedo shirt, blue eye mask, tasseled ear plugs, with her hair half-up half-down. It is deliberately un-constructed but maintains the elegance and class that is integral to her character.

While there’s hardly any furniture in her apartment, the single piece that grabs attention is half of a bathtub placed in the living room and decorated with bright pillows. It can be understood as a metaphor for her own life: a shattered item, repurposed, that she cleverly disguised and made chic with pretty accessories.

Holly Golightly was a struggling city girl, so the costume designers were careful to re-use her clothing throughout the film just as the character Holly would have done in real life. Her basic wardrobe is reinvented in each scene by introducing different accessories (hats, jewelry, scarves), creating a handful of memorable looks. The black dress that appears in the opening scenes is worn later with a big black hat tied with a camel colored sash, earrings, and oversized sunglasses when she’s on her way to visit Sing Sing prison. The next time the dress appears Hepburn is wearing a small black hat with a white puff at her party. She highlights the outfit with sparkly earrings and a statement necklace. In yet another incarnation of the dress, she comes home from a date with a long, white silk scarf flowing from her neck.

Style, grace and good manners: we love everything about Paul (George Peppard). The audience is introduced to Paul when he has a chance encounter with Holly. He looks smart and polished in a wool blazer, white oxford shirt, and cranberry tie. The cardigan beneath the jacket helps to make the formal look less rigid. His camel-colored sweater matches Holly’s sash, immediately creating a subtle harmony between the characters. Throughout the movie, the fashion looks sported by the couple complement one another.

When Holly has a party at her place, she’s wearing a one-shouldered Grecian-style gown, accessorized only by her fabulous earrings and a sophisticated cigarette holder. But what we don’t know is that her fantastic frock is actually a bath towel; in a deleted scene of the movie Holly Golightly was taking a bath when a party started in her apartment and she cleverly put  together an outfit from what she had at hand. Only Ms. Hepburn could wear a towel and make it look like haute couture.
