“Winnipeg Tonepushers got the crowd going with a lively tech- house set.”

MUTEK began over a decade ago, in 2000, with founder Alain Mongeau launching the festival as a complimentary platform to the Festival of New Cinema and New Media. Since that time, MUTEK has grown to become an exposé on underground electronic music at various locations around the city; the Fringe Fest of dance music, so to speak. Though MUTEK works in tandem with Parc Jean Drapeau’s PIKNIC ELECTRONIK for one day of the festival, the two events are very different: the collective that MUTEK has built resonates with an unconventional, more experimentally-based sound and the music you’ll hear is a-typical, even for a city like Montreal.
Aside from the open-air events, MUTEK boasts a huge online outlet with live-streamed events available in collaboration with Radio Canada’s Bande-a-Part, as well as with the STM for a unique community collective called Audiosphere. Advancements in technology definitely play in MUTEK’s favour, meaning that you don’t have to miss out on the fun even if you’re at work or outside the city. With the expansion of MUTEK creatively and technologically, I can hardly wait to see what the project will showcase next year.
