Mildred Pierce Conference

Haynes decided not to make the series at all like the ’45 film done in the noir style. “Noir is more observational, we wanted to go more toward the neo seventies. Shoot more naturalistic and not so stylistic as noir films do. We wanted to shoot on film, to keep the graininess…. let the color be developed differently than digital. This was a determined decision today as digital is becoming more popular.”

Kate Winslet on shooting for television:

“It was the most challenging job I have done since Titanic. Covering 12 pages of script a day rather than in film where shooting 4 pages a day is a lot. ”

On the Venice Film Festival:

” I am in 3 films here in the festival and it is just a coincidence that 16 months of my life is being honored in three days…”

On portraying Mildred Pierce:

“Take someone like Joan Crawford and one just wants to be as good as her. I am happy to have my hands on such beautiful material. It was a really extraordinary part of all of our lives. Truly a rich, full, very rewarding thing to be a part of.”

I just devoured the book. We were doing such a literal translation. I need to find small nuances in the book to help create a woman who was absolutely full”.

Evan Rachel Wood on portraying Veda:

“Veda felt as though I was playing a part of someone who was also trying to play a part. She was one of the most challenging characters I have taken on. I wanted to make her more than just this horrible bratty daughter.”

Haynes has whipped a formidable cast into a winning production that is clearly benefitting from the newly found quality in production for television.
