UNTTLD

The collaborative effort of Montrealers Jose Manuel St Jacques and Simon Belanger, UNTTLD manifests an “un” philosophy in their label’s culture and vision – untamed, unnamed, unexplained, unashamed. After years spent studying fashion design in Montreal and Milan, Jose and Simon began working under legendary Montreal designer, Denis Gagnon before competing in Quebec’s version of the hit television series Project Runway, La Collection – winning the grand prize of $10 000 to start their own line. Now the minds behind up-and-coming label, UNTTLD, the duo gained early acclaim with the intricate designs of their Spring 12 collection – ethereal scarf wrap dresses cut in lightweight silk offered a delicate femininity alongside the collection’s edgier slick leathers, industrial zippers and fragmented, loose-weave spiderweb crochet garments hand-stitched by Montreal’s Jocelyn Picard.

A stand-out oyster grey fringed dress made from threads of rubber by artist and architect Nadia Topouzanov, and their spike-trimmed shoes (a collaboration with acclaimed footwear label Aldo) made waves as well.  For Fall, the designers continued to distill their direction, this time with corset-like lacing that crept up the legs of ultra-slim trousers, draped strands of heavy gold chains and a vast array of furs including a stand-out fabrication of long human-like black hair that trimmed the shoulders of a leather jacket. The designers, who often interpret song lyrics, poems or quotes as inspiration for their collections, offer only a short piece by Japanese poet and painter Yosa Buson as insight into their Spring 13 collection, which promises to be a shrewd development of their fearless aesthetic:

An evening orchid   Hidden in its scent   The flower’s whiteness Pure white plum blossoms

slowly begin to turn
  the color of dawn

MACKAGE

Conceived by Montreal-natives Eran Elfassy and Elisa Dahan in 1999 as a solution to bulky, ill-fitting outerwear, Mackage pioneered the introduction of body-conscious silhouettes cut entirely in leather. Firm believers that outerwear is an essential part of any look, the duo create clean, contemporary pieces that reflect a distinctly sleek vision: perfectly tailored leather jackets, moto vests and slim cigarette pants form the basis of their collections, while seasonal pieces like down-filled cropped parkas and single-breasted wool peacoats that maintain their coveted fitted silhouette are integral elements of their winter lines for men and women.
