Le Fabulex Destin d’Amelie Poulain

The multiple award winning film Amelie aka Le Fabulex Destin d’Amelie Poulain is one of Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s most beloved and instantly classic romantic films. This weekend you can watch it under the stars for FREE at 181 Sterling Road, Toronto, Ontario, right in the heart of the Junction Triangle. Originally filmed in French with English subtitles, this story is the most enduring tale of love, happiness and the human will that I’ve ever seen and I can think of no better place for viewers new and old to see it then on the big screen, under the summer stars.

Here is the story of Amelie, a girl who is grown up with only her imagination to keep her company and fight off loneliness after the death of her mother. As a young woman she finds pleasures in simple comforts until the death of Princess Diana leads her on a mission to bring happiness to others. The story follows the philosophy that there are a series of possible links in Amelie’s life and due to her will she’s able to connect and create love between them. Although the plot seems straightforward it’s the cinematography, gorgeous art direction, and subtle humour that lends this film to the beautiful, quirk high note it floats on (and is so synonymous with a Jeunet film.). From one of the opening scenes where Amelie is forced to free her pet fish into a gentle lake as it starts to rain, the lithe piano soundtrack touching on the strange, sentimental moment between a girl and her only friend, a suicidal goldfish; you’re hooked.

When Amelie was released it was met with critical acclaim, scooping “Best Film” award at the European Film AwardsFour Cesar Awards, 2 BAFTAs and 5 Academy Award nominations as well as being selected by the New York Times as one of the “Best 1,000 movies ever made”. More indicative to the tissue inducing love story was Entertainment Weekly naming the story of Amelie chasing her love around the streets of France as No 9 on it’s list of top 25 romantic gestures. Beating out Pretty Woman’s final fire escape scene,Beauty and the Beast’s “I give you a library”, and when Harry Met Sally- the “They finally get together” moment.

Amelie is one of those films that touches on an eternal deep vulnerability that we all have within us, without the script ever getting too heavy. It is and forever will be one of my favourite films of all time for its quirky ability to make you laugh and cry at the same moments of kindness. For me, it’s the perfect love story because it showcases love from all angles. A love story under the summer sky? You’d be crazy to miss out on this one. Grab a blanket and someone special and make your way down to 181 Sterling Road for my favourite film of all time, and what’s soon to be yours as well.
