4. The Cat Eye:
The cat eye has been dominating runways all over the globe from Chanel’s edgy take on the lower lash line, to the pretty, simplistic cat eye seen on Vawk and Vawkin’s models. Their Spring/Summer 2013 cat eye is truly eternal. Pulling off an even, professional looking application is all about “Practice, patience, a steady hand, and a good eyeliner! “ explains Buursma.
She swears by Shiseido’s Automatic Fine Eyeliner, since the liquid eyeliner lasts about 4 times longer than most liners that “tend to dry out fairly fast“.
Buursma’s Advise:
For first time Cat Eye applicants Buursma recommends “using short strokes that connect together will gain results more efficiently… rather than trying to do the whole thing in one go which can lead to uneven lines and the liner blobbing.”
“Make sure the eyelid has a clean even base using a paint pot, add a faint crease shadow accent, a couple coats of black mascara” and for an extra dose of drama and vava-woom? “Layer on a pair of fabulous mink eyelashes from Velour Lashes, using Duo Adhesive for your eyes to really pop“.
5. Sexy Bed Head Hair:
Our favourite trend of the Spring/Summer 2013 runways was the tousled sexy, bed head hair trend. This look was absolutely EVERYWHERE. Arthur Mendonca models sported messy, big hair, Vawk andVawkin’s brushed out curls, and Express’ big and chic tousled waves. The undone, unpolished beach-worthy ‘do was prominent. An easy way to get this ‘Off duty model’ look is to apply a wave enhancing spray, like Bumble and Bumble’s Surf Spray on freshly washed hair.
Divide the hair into two even sections and braid into two tight braids, stopping 1 inch before the hair’s end. Gently loosen random sections of the braid for a less than perfect wave. Let braids air dry or use a blow dryer to remove moisture. Once braids are dry, undo and before shaking them out apply a flexible hairspray like CHI Infra Texture Dual Action Hairspray. Finger comb waves out. With a 1-inch curling iron, like the Rowenta Beauty Curl Active barrel that we adore, choose random sections of hair and wrap around the barrel, holding it vertically for about 20 sections. Brush out curls while still warm. Apply hairspray onto your fingers tips and smooth down flyways.
The great thing about this look is the more you play with your hair, the bigger, more tousled and more fabulous it gets.
6. Purple Lips:
Spring’s sensual, gothic inspired violet-hued lips are a refreshing change from winter’s bold, reds. Corals, mandarin and cherry hues dominated the runways but we noticed this purple trend popping up in edgier shows. Haider Ackerman, the Montreal designers Unttld and the super chic, Lucian Matis models all sported it on the Spring/Summer ‘13 WMCFW runways. I reserve a special spot in my heart for the darker hue, which is rampant among Toronto street stylistas. This shade is tricky so for the exact shade of violet you desire, Buursma recommends trying Nars Lipsticks in Volga, Valparaiso andDamned Velvet Matte Lip Pencil.
What is the secret to making this unusual shade work?
“Precision is key, and so is the lip liner. An invisible liner is a great corner cutter when swapping between the many hot colours.” Buursma recommends trying Benefit’s D’Finer D’Liner.
7. Bold Colourful Lips:
“I love that big bright lips are trending, it’s so much fun!” squeals Buursma. To ease yourself into wearing new colours, she suggests trying the less expensive brands, and wearing new shades around the house to gain confidence with them.
“A great matte coral shade is made by Revlon, the 005 Strawberry Suede or the berry magenta 630 Sea Fleur by L’Oreal. You can get a lot of depth from this by layering.”
“You will require a little bit of prep to pull bright colours like ‘Bubblegum Pink’ off.” Buursma explains.
“’Bubble gum pinks’ have a knack for disgracing the colour of your teeth and it’s more difficult to find a flattering shade.” “A whitening strip, like Crest White strips are recommended to let your teeth shine their whitest against the contrasting pink tones.”
8. Very 90’s:
90’s inspiration was everywhere on the WMCFW Spring/Summer ’13, from sleek, low ponytails at Joe Fresh, to tousled rock star hair and Courtney Love approved, cherry red lips on Arthur Mendonca’srunway. The 90’s are back and better than ever. Inspiration with a contemporary twist comes from Madonna, David Bowie and Courtney Love.
The key to this look is picking one or two trends like ‘tousled bed head’ hair or a great statement lip and then down playing everything else for that sexy, “un-done” appeal. For the gals with straight hair: to pull off the Kate Moss, healthy straight look, start with a moisturizing shampoo & conditioner. We are loving the Matrix Total Repair collection.
Apply a ‘leave in treatment’ like Matrix Total Repair Break-Fix Leave In Elixir and let your hair naturally dry. To smooth out ‘flyaways’, use a small amount of restorative oil. We are gaga over Moroccanoil®, available in formulas for thick and thin hair.
