The Story of “Kinyarwanda” Acclaimed Documentary by Alrick Brown

LOVE HATE LIFE DEATH

Kinyarwanda is a true account of the survivors of the 1994 Rwanda genocide who had refused to take part in the killing. In 1994, the most respected Muslim leader in Rwanda, the Mufti of Rwanda, issued a fatwa forbidding Muslims from participating in the killing of the Tutsi. The doors of the holy Muslim mosques were thrown open by the Imams to accommodate the refugees. Tutsi and Hutu both sought refuge in the Muslim mosques, the Grand Mosque of Kigali and the madrassa of Nyanza.

Genocide is a terrible reality of the modern world. What happened in 1994 in Rwanda took the world by surprise and left a renewed horror of the lengths hate and intolerance will provoke humans to go to enforce beliefs. Everyone is targeted for annihilation and ruthlessly hunted down – women, children, young, old, sick and frail.

During this terrible time in Rwanda there were also stories of heroism by the people who refused to participate in the slaughter. This film documents the remarkable accounts of human determination and sacrifice made by both Hutu and Tutsi to protect and support even their perceived enemy under such life-threatening circumstances. Hutu and Tutsi were able to overcome the hatred and suspicion with which they had been taught to look upon each other.

This is ultimately an uplifting story about forgiveness, tolerance, acceptance and healing. Make sure to visit the website to find out more about the story.
