The Screen Actors Guild Awards® established in 1994, is a screen industry event honouring the best in cinema and TV. Last year’s nominees included 14 out of 20 final Oscar winners. It is one of the great film/TV awards events and very special as it is the only awards event in which the awards are based on peer selection.

“Of the top industry accolades presented to performers, only the Screen Actors Guild Awards® are selected solely by actors’ peers in SAG-AFTRA. Two nominating panels — one for television and one for film — each composed of 2,200 randomly selected union members from across the United States, chose this year’s Actor® and stunt ensemble honors nominees. Nominees for the 20th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards® for outstanding performances in 2013 in five film and eight television categories as well as the SAG Awards honors for outstanding action performances by film and television stunt ensembles were announced in Los Angeles.”

FILM

We first got a hint of the high level of cinematography coming out this year at the Venice International Film Festival in August, where GRAVITY was the festival opener. AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY and PHILOMENA were also in the lineup and now all compete for SAG awards. DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, RUSH, and 12 YEARS A SLAVE all opened at TIFF in September. BLUE JASMINE was already becoming a festival darling since opening at Cannes. The year is not over and there are still some major contenders (AMERICAN HUSTLE, WOLF OF WALL STREET, INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS, and THE HOBBIT: DESOLATION OF SMAUG) coming into theatres over the last few weeks of 2013.

TELEVISION

On the TV side of the SAG awards a new level of outstanding programming and competition is evident. Comedy, drama, mini series and made for TV films have taken on a new level of excellence as the competition for small screen viewing increases. BOARDWALK EMPIRE (HBO), BREAKING BAD (AMC), GAME OF THRONES (HBO), DOWNTON ABBEY (PBS) and HOMELAND (Showtime) are in contention for best ensemble cast. Best ensemble cast for a comedy includes; ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT (Netflix), 30 ROCK (NBC), THE BIG BANG THEORY (CBS), MODERN FAMILY (ABC) and VEEP (HBO). Other outstanding shows demonstrating the versatility and high quality of TV productions include; TOP OF THE LAKE (Sundance Channel), KILLING KENNEDY (National Geographic Channel), BURTON AND TAYLOR (BBC America). The Life Achievement Award is going to RITA MORENO.

Sadly there are some people we will miss greatly. Posthumous awards nominations go to James Gandolfini for his role as Albert in the movie ENOUGH SAID (Fox Searchlight Pictures) and FAST & FURIOUS 6 (Universal Pictures) star Paul Walker, nominated along with the ensemble stunt team.

The SAG Awards ceremonies will take place Saturday, January 18th. They will be Simulcast Live on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014 on TNT and TBS at 8 p.m. (ET)/5 p.m. (PT). A live stream of the SAG Awards can also be viewed online through the TBS and TNT websites, as well as through the Watch TBS and Watch TNT apps for iOS or Android. The Ceremony is followed by a Screen Actors Guild Post-Awards Gala benefiting the Screen Actors Guild Foundation will be hosted for the 18th consecutive year by People Magazine and the Entertainment Industry Foundation(EIF).
