The Final Member Review

The Final Member, directed by Jonah Bekhor and Zach Math, is a fascinating documentary about an unusual museum in Iceland. Founded in 1996 by Sigurd Hjartarson, the Icelandic Phallological Museum is the first and only museum dedicated to the penis. It’s all very serious and scientific and then the opening credits feature the name Andrew Dickler and all that goes out the window.

This is a movie about a man’s single minded quest to complete his collection. His collection of penises. He just needs one more thing. A human penis. We follow Sigurd as he tries to find a suitable donor, with a choice between Icelandic celebrity Pall Arason or American Tom Mitchell and his penis Elmo.

I’m not entirely sure what to say about this movie. I want to be serious and talk about the many interesting things this movie brings up, like the culture clash between the brash American and the more laid-back Icelander, the extremes people will go to for fame, or the conflict between a serious documentary about biology and the multiple times I had to pause the movie to stop giggling, but this is a movie about phallic specimens belonging to all various types of mammal. They come in different shape and size. Some even belong to mythological beasts, like elves and trolls. One scene showa a penis getting an Old Glory tattoo, another the preliminary sketches for a comic about the adventures of Elmo the SuperPenis. There is even an interview with an old man talking about the different STD’s he got and who he got them from. It’s funny as hell, but it isn’t meant to be, which only makes it funnier. Seeing a man discussing how he wants his penis displayed (with holiday appropriate attire!) is not something you can take seriously, regardless of how stone faced he is.

It’s definitely not for kids, or even some adults. If you’re not a child, or the wrong kind of adult, go see it, I thoroughly recommend it. You might want to go see a priest or something afterwards, though.
