Canadian Music: Kicking Ass and Taking Numbers – The 2012 JUNO’S

In the last couple of years Canadian Music has had a massive jolt to it’s system. Those who thought Canada couldn’t possibly produce more than jock rock anthems had a swift kick to their arses with the international success of artists from hip-hop superstar Drake to electronic wunderkinds Crystal Castles to up and coming rockers The Sheepdogs to indie darling Feist to DJ extraordinaire and Grammy performer, Deadmau5. In my opinion Arcade Fire’s Grammy win for Album of the year in 2011 was the marker that Canadian Music had arrived, was here to stay, and oh yeah- was better than everyone else. Take that UK Pop stars, Canadian Musicians are the next hot thing. The bar has been raised and for the first time ever I am excited- nay, exhilarated for this Sunday’s Juno awards. Besides performances from City & ColourHey Rosetta! And Deadmau5 (which I suspect will blow his Grammy performance out of the water) this year’s nominees have me mixing new playlists- boppin’ my head, singing along and feeling excited about the legacy of music these artists are leaving behind. Check out some of my favourite nominees of this year then tune in Sunday April 1st on CTV for the Juno Awards 2012.

D Sisive

Prolific rapper D Sisive and this year’s “Rap Recording of the year” nominee for “Jonestown 2: Jimmy Go Bye Bye” has been on my playlist for as long as I can remember, I was hooked the moment I heard him rhyme over Coconut Record’s “West Coast”.  The 2009 Polaris music awards recipient for “Let the Children Die” is best known for his Juno nominated EP “The Book”, and “Vaudeville”. His catchy beats, brutally honest and witty lyrics are what set him apart and “Jonestown 2” is a perfect example of this. D Sisive is among some of Canada’s hip-hop heavy hitters for this year’s “Rap Recording” award including Drake and Kardinal Offishall, which assures me you’ll be hearing about him for years to come.

Can’t wait for Juno’s this Sunday!  Broadcasting live from Ottawa, Canada.

Coeur Du Pirate

The adorable Quebec singer-songwriter ‘Coeur De Pirate’ (French for ‘Pirate Heart’) is up for “Francaphone Album of the year” for the album “Blonde”. Coeur De Pirate was previously nominated for aJuno in 2009 for her debut album “Coeur De Pirate” and won “Best Original Song” at the Victoires de la Musique in 2010 (France’s equivalent to the Grammy’s). If you had to personify sweet summer days, popsicles and sticky sweet love to anyone-she would be it. “Blonde” is a heartbreaking, feel good “play-on-repeat” kind of album and my fingers are double crossed that she’ll take home the Juno this year.
