Knowing they were trapped in an unfair game, Billy Beane and his sidekick Peter Brand had to reinvent the A’s. In doing so, they knew they would run up against great bias, a ‘vitriolic wall’ that would really test who they were. It was a new approach that would potentially threaten a ‘status quo’ developed over years and was very upsetting to Scouts, Team managers, Players and the critics. The secret deals, the evaluation of a player’s worth, everything was about to be challenged.
The other part of story is the compelling Billy Beane himself. He appears on the surface to be a man interested in winning baseball games but as the story unfolds we discover that he is really searching for a way to fulfill his destiny. Riding disappointment after disappointment it seems, a second chance that everyone craves but not one that everyone has the courage to seize, comes to Billy.
This movie will become a classic for baseball fans but more so for anyone who believes in second chances and an indomitable human spirit. This movie reaffirms the dream that one person can make a difference. A must see film especially for the inspired performance by Brad Pitt as Billy Beane.
