Mistaken For Strangers NXNE13 Review

Posted 10 years ago by myetvmedia

This is a strange one. Beginning as a documentary on The National, it quickly transforms into something very different. Director Tom Berninger describes it as a documentary about a failed documentary. Thematically, it’s about family, jealousy, talent and drive. Berninger, also in the role of the main character, is the younger brother of National frontman, Matt Berninger, hired to fill-in as a roadie for a few months. He decides to bring along his camera and record what happens. He thought it would make some good backstage videos for the website or the tour DVD. What actually happens is much different.

The National’s musical output has been described as “dark, melancholy and difficult to interpret,” which also applies to this documentary. It’s a very personal movie. Interviews with different band members quickly turn into “And what’s Matt like? Did Matt ask about me?” Aaron Dessner (guitarist) at times seems terrified of Tom. Ordinarily, these interviews would never make it past editing. But they work. It’s not about the band, or the music. It’s about brothers. Of the Nationals 5 members, four of them are brothers. Tom and Matt are the odd ones out. “He’s a rockstar, and I am not.”

Matt occasionally shares stories of his own hardship, like the many times he played to a near-empty hall, and the emotional breakdowns that followed. And he wants to help his little brother when he faces similar troubles. Tom is, at times, jealous of Matt’s success. Who wouldn’t be? They argue, they bond, they laugh, they offer what advice they can to each other. It’s sad, goofy, touching. It’s got heart.

Throw in the occasional celebrity (Will Arnett makes a brief appearance), some fantastic concert footage, and you’ve got a strange but brilliant story. Highly recommended.
