Have you heard of Aaron Schneider? Chances are, most people have not, but this first time feature director is already an academy award – winner for his short “Two Soldiers” (2004).  His film “Get Low” had its World Premiere at TIFF receiving a standing ovation. Boasting a stellar cast with the likes of legendary actors Robert Duval, Bill Murray and Sissy Spacek, Schneider brings a touching story about a lonely hermit with a mysterious past to the screen.

Felix “Bush” (Robert Duval) has isolated himself in the foothills of Eastern Tennessee for 40 years. Known to the local community as a crazy old man, he has only his trusty mule Gracey, his shotgun and the haunting memories of his past for company.

Felix heads into town to seek guidance on planning an event that has been 40 years in the making, his funeral.  At this funeral there will be no dead body to mourn because Felix plans to attend. Enter Frank Quinn (Bill Murray) a funeral director with a floundering business and his partner Frank (Lucas Black). They intend to take the opportunity to bilk this crazy old man out of his money. Felix though may have them fooled.

Duval and Murray have a brilliant on screen chemistry that is hilarious and heart-felt. The two Hollywood juggernauts lend their experience to a visually melodic script that has an enduring story to share with all audiences. The supporting cast brings the town to life through memorable performances.

“Get Low” is shot with elegance and delivers the emotional rollercoaster one hopes to find in any movie that has heart.  It is genuinely funny and very well written. Schneider has shown that he is a directorial talent to watch.
