Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Review

8/10

The story of the game is not going to win any awards despite the top tier talent involved. The game was written by one of the masters of high fantasyRA Salvatore of ‘Forgotten Realms’ fame. I am a huge fan of his works and quite specifically the Dridst Do Urden character. The story is very familiar and the characters quite typical, despite all this I enjoyed the story. It’s like that familiar burger place you hit up once a month, it might be the same old burger but hot damn, do I love burgers and this one is made juuust right. With overarching themes that range from the stagnant search for identity, to the mostly fresh equality in a land of racial genocide, the game hits its dramatic stride well and spins a yarn that wont take on “Mass Effect” but is undoubtedly better than what you’ll come across in your standard FPS. You might feel disconnected playing a voiceless character with no memory and it’s hard to connect with the game’s cast as their dialogue is either information about the world of Amalur or info pertaining to your current quest.

On a technical level the games graphics are not going to wow you despite a very smooth performance. Artistically however the game is something of a spectacle with a world envisioned byTodd McFarlane; the creator of Spawn and one of the founders of ‘Image Comics’, the game bears his artistic style in spades and that is a great thing. The balance struck between what you would expect to see in a fantasy world and Mcfarlane’s artistic sensibilities is fantastic, you will (if you are at all familiar with his work) recognize his esthetic’s all throughout the adventure. For years now Wiigames have wowed us with strong art direction proving that style and composition trounce technical splendor.

With an all star cast behind the game; RA Salvatore (“Forgotten Realms”), Todd Mcfarlane(“Spawn”) and Ken Rolston (“The Elder Scrolls”) you would expect “Amalur” to be the beginning of a great RPG franchise and it is. If your looking for a long game to sink your teeth into and enjoy a little action in your RPG do yourself a favour and pick this one up.
