FAT 2012 Fashion Art Toronto

“As soon as we walked in we were greeted with loud pulsating beats reminiscent of an industrial rave, spun by FAT resident DJ, Daniel R Wilson (note: tweet this man for a playlist ASAP) and surrounded by sky high heels, brixton fedoras as far as the eye can see and the Toronto uniform of all black everything, present company included. Duly noted that long sheer flowy skirts in primary colours are trending on Sterling Road.

Everything I’ve ever wanted in an event was there; art installations, performances, music and fashion. My god, the fashion!”

Flavie Halais’- TRUST was the opening piece that summarized what FAT exemplifies in a beautiful, simplistic way: “We believe in keeping an open mind

The Performance Project Survival by Collen Booth , Luis Hernandaz and Eric Iba started the show off on a surreal, downturned note. Painting a picture of a potential future provided the ozone layer dissipates and Martians land on Earth.

Once the performance was over, Dj Daniel R Wilson turned the mood right back to it’s jovial beginnings, mixing a sweet blend of familiar remix’s with bouncy beats (Can’t get enough of Azealia Bank’s “212”). The people in the back row were a mix of the industry’s tastemakers, models, artists, show crew and event attendees. They sway, giving off the energy that the crowd could break into a full-blown dance party at any second. I wasn’t opposed to the idea either. The energy was amazing.

Highlights of the night were Hypoxia, by Pippa Latex- A Hedi Erotica Latex Dream and Haphazard’s Tormented: A mixture of circus freak performance, future anachronism, wasteland- graffiti chic, lush textiles, paint, paint and more paint (literally spraying from one models mouth.)

There was also the week long Dressing Room Project that featured a virtual & on-site multimedia art experience. 12 site-specific artist spaces present work ranging from live performances, broadcasts and video projections to interactive photo booths. FAT was bananas, but don’t take my word for it, check out the footage and then kick yourself for not knowing about this alt-fashion event sooner. (Hey, there’s always next year.) Thanks to Antonio Parente at minglemedia.ca for getting the word out.
