#3: Little Nellie You Only Live Twice (1967)
Little Nellie is one of the most memorable vehicles seen in a Bond film. 007 (Sean Connery) flies this single-seat heavily armed autogyro during a recon mission in Japan. The autogyro was invented by RAF Wing commander Ken Wallace and was equipped with mockup armaments by the films special effects teams. The sequence turns into an action-packed aerial pursuit, where Little Nellie’s weapons including machine guns, rocket launchers, flamethrowers and smoke screen eliminate the pesky SPECTRE pilots delaying Bond’s mission. Camera John Jordan’s foot was severed during the filming of the sequence as a result of a severe downdraft created by the helicopters used for filming. It took more than 85 take offs, 5 hours of flight and Wallace, who piloted the autogyro nearly crashed several times in the process of completing this film sequence.
