NXNE 13 What to See: Film

The 19th NXNE Festival will be taking over Toronto June 10–16th. With a staggering 1000 bands, 30 films, 150 comedy acts, art installations all over the city, plus an interactive section, NXNE 2013 has something to offer everyone; the trick will be fitting it all into one jammed packed week. While everyone knows about the musical lineup (‘cause really we know you’re dying to wristband your way into all 1000 acts) we thought we’d take a look at all the other reasons why NXNE 2013 is gunna’ rock your face off. PS we are doing a special post just on the top music choices.

This year’s NXNE Film Festival runs in partnership with Hot Docs, which will make the Bloor Street cinema your one-stop-shop for all your NXNE films. Highlights of the film roster include:

All Out War

Kicking off NXNE, Thursday June 13th at 9:15pm, this canadian documentary features four of north america’s most talented b-boys/breakdancers as it takes an indepth look at the subculture and evolution of this urban artform.

Fresh off the buzz garnered from its world premiere at HotDocs, Mistaken for Strangers makes a second pass at Toronto on Friday 14th at 4:00pm. This doc follows indi band The National on their international tour. Featuring far more than just music, the film follows the three sets of brothers comprising the band, on their journey both musical and personal.

BB King – The Life of Riley

Narrated by Morgan Freeman, BB King shares his journey from orphaned youth to “King of Blues”. Featuring interviews with greats Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, and Bono. BB King – The Life of Riley plays on Friday the 14th at 6:45pm.

The Rolling Stones – Charlie is My Darling – Ireland 1965

An intimate behind-the-scenes look at the Rolling Stones on tour as their first #1 hit was taking off in the USA. Featuring never before seen footage of the band’s formative years, Charlie is My Darling screens Friday 14th at 9:15pm.

AKA Doc Promus

The little known Doc Promus is the songwriter behind some of the greatest Rock and Roll hits of all time. This Magic Moment, Turn Me Loose and Viva Las Vegas are a small sampling of the gargantuan hits he wrote for artists like Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, B.B. King and many more. Discover the man behind the music Sunday June 16th at 1pm.
