NXNE 13 Top Music Overview Part 1

Posted 10 years ago by myetvmedia

Mikal Cronin has been a prolific songwriter and performer over the past few years. Closely tied to Ty Segall, Mikal Cronin plays garage rock infused with power pop. His new LP MCII is a step above his other releases, with improved song writing and louder, crisper production. Mikal Cronin does not do anything revolutionary with his music, but he is brilliant at what he does. MCII provides for some of the catchiest tracks of the year. The lead single Weight features Cronin’s best song writing yet, as it is also one of the best tracks released in 2013 so far. Mikal Cronin manages to beautifully enthuse the listener with infectious melody, but also incorporates messy textures from garage rock style production. You will enjoy Mikal Cronin if you are into The Black Keys or The White Stripes. He fits nicely within the garage rock label; however, Cronin’s music is truly evocative pop, which makes it easily digestible to the average listener.

NXNE offers the opportunity for lesser known bands and more left field or obscure music to play in front of enthusiastic crowds. Up there with the big names are many up-and-coming acts. The manifold niche performances add colour and unpredictability to the festival, which seems to be an aspect that has been lacking from many of the larger music festivals. By incorporating stages into intimate settings across the city, NXNE provides a warmer connection between the audience and the musician.
