MUTEK & PICNIK ELECTRONIK Montreal 2012 Bigger & Better

This year’s MUTEK was a long-awaited week for me, and my first stop was over to a free, early evening event at Place de la Paix on June 1st for a set by one of the only MUTEK artists I am well acquainted with musically, Alicia Hush.

With such a short event time (17h – 19h45), there was a lot of music packed into very little time, with quick opening acts from Larry James and Tonepushers. (For Tonepushers music see page 2 )Winnipeg duo Tonepushers played a lively tech-house based set, but it was obviously Alicia that the crowd was there to see. The dance floor quickly filled up as Alicia opened with peculiar, silly vocals about strawberry jam (such is her way) and continued to pump out chunky, high-energy, minimal tech that had the crowd dancing, non-stop. I was lucky to catch up with Alicia at MUTEK to ask her about the experience:

“Playing at MUTEK was my first festival experience and it was a great honour to share a bill with such awesome talent. I’m still smiling over it all. I feel happy about the outcome of my set and the response from the crowd was overwhelming. I would have been happy with 20 dancing people that day, so the number of bodies was incredible. I was trying very hard to keep in my tears of joy at the end”.

My next stop was a collaborative event between PIKNIC and MUTEK, held at Parc Jean Drapeau’s Place de l’Homme on June 3rd. Unsure of what to expect from such a wide variety of artists, I was very curious to see how the day would unfold. Catching just the end of Nicolas Jaar’s early afternoon set, it was clear he had played an amazing show; the dance floor was packed early. Though Jaar’s style can often be quite slow, his set at PIKNIC ended on an upbeat but experimental note. D.C./Berlin duo Benoit and Sergio hit the decks next with a solid set

– they absolutely brought down the house with crowd-favourites “Walk and Talk” and “What I’ve Lost”, but the mood dwindled just slightly as the tempo slowed near the end of their set. Finally, US producers and label heads, Wolf + Lamb closed it down with an unexpected set that was, perhaps, not for everyone. After opening with Coolio’s “Gangster’s Paradise”, and throwing in Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” a bit later, the set was an animated balance between commercial and deep house.
