Eaton Gallery of Rome
Toronto, Ontario ROM July 1st, 2011
New Galleries Opening: Explore an imperial legacy in four new permanent galleries on Level 3 located in the Centre Block and Philosophers’ Walk Wing. The four new permanent galleries comprising the Eaton Gallery of Rome will include over 500 artifacts that invite visitors to explore aspects of daily Roman life, experience the contrasting tastes throughout the vast Empire, and the Roman influence on diverse local cultures.
The Bratty Exhibit of Etruria:
Etruscan society declined as the Roman Republic grew, but their lasting legacy can be found in rare, highly complex works in terracotta, bronze and gold, showcased in a new feature exhibit within the Eaton Gallery.
Joey and Toby Tanenbaum Gallery of Rome and the Near East:
Priceless architectural pieces including mosaics and an extremely rare “ciborium” provide the framework for a gallery of treasures telling visitors the stories of Roman expansion into lands further east and south, including the great cities of Antioch, Caesarea and Petra.
Joey and Toby Tanenbaum Gallery of Byzantium:
Trace the cultural riches and artistic traditions after the dedication of Constantinople (now Istanbul) in the new gallery highlighting this iconic period in the history of the Mediterranean world.
Galleries of Africa: Nubia
The first urban, literary societies in Africa south of the Sahara belonged to the Nubians, and their writing system was the second oldest in Africa. This new gallery allows visitors to explore an extraordinary ancient legacy that stretched from Aswan to Egypt to Khartoum in Sudan through the lens of both ancient artifacts and ongoing, current ROM archaeological research.
