The Great Beauty (La Grande Bellezza) Paolo Sorrentino
The Great Beauty, “La Gande Bellezza” by director Paolo Sorrentino, starring Toni Servillo, Carlo Verdone and Sabrina Ferilli has captured international attention. A sumptuous and very unusual film, it is nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film Golden Globe and a BAFTA Best International Independent Film. It is Italy’s submission to the Oscars and has already won 3 European Film Awards amongst many others.

The Wind Rises (Kaze Tachinu) Hayao Miyazaki
The Wind Rises‘ is nothing short of a masterpiece and a brilliant swan song from a beloved filmmaker”. The World Premiere was held in Venice, Italy at the 70th Venice international Film Festival and the North American premiere at TIFF in Toronto. Hayao Miyazaki at 72 is an internationally celebrated, Oscar winning filmmaker (Spirited Away). “The Wind Rises may be the most personal film out of Studio Ghibli to date.” This intimate story, a biopic is set in pre war Japan, follows the main character Jiro Horikoshi, an aeronautics engineer, over the course of his work with Mitsubishi and his challenges creating the design of the A6M Zero.

The Hunt (Jagten) Thomas Vinterberg
Thomas Vinterberg’s ‘The Hunt’ (12), stars Mads Mikkelsen as Lucas, a man falsely accused of a crime he did not commit.   The crime he is alleged to have committed is being spread surreptitiously through the community by rumour. Vinterberg invites the audience to experience first hand what it feels like to be falsely accused of a crime and to witness one man’s descent into madness fuelled by the power of rumour. Lucas is an energetic male daycare assistant who is as young at heart as the kids he helps. He lives a simple life in a small town where his hunting buddies and dog are all he has. Mikkelsen won best Actor at Cannes for this performance.
